Celebrating Christ's Birthday 2009 in San Pablo

Christmas is celebrating the birth of the Christ Child... He is the Reason for the season... and so inspite of calamities and difficulties, Filipinos have a festive celebration of Christmas. Most families have Christmas lunch together and the exchange of gifts. We become children again during Christmas day!

Our St. Paul the First Hermit Cathedral is decorated with simply elegant wreaths. Since the altar is undergoing rennovation, the Simbang Gabi is held at the patio attended by hundreds of parishioners.

And this year, the Belen is at the entrance of the Cathedral -

Christmas is for children... so there must be a Christmas Tree which I decorated with thirdy's stuffed toys.

December is the time to bring out again the Nativity - this time atop the piano.

Of course, we start to "feel" the Christmas season with the carolers (the Red Cross youth volunteers and the JCI Sn Pablo).

And the preparation for gift giving ...

When we first dabbled in publishing web sites around 1998, one of our first projects was this "Maligayang Pasko Chordbook" (or "Merry Christmas Chordbook") with guitar chords and lyrics of Filipino Christmas songs and carols with the help of members of our original MSC Band who are all performing musicians now. Over the years, with very few updates, it has been growing in popularity. We recently added some YouTube videos to the pages, which are really cool.

"Christmas in our hearts" is one of our favorites, and it a beautiful song celebrating the joy and happiness of the holidays and remembering God. The video features the duet of the composer-singer Jose Mari Chan and his daughter Liza Chan.

The Railways and Industrial Heritage Society Photowall Donation Has Arrived

The RIHSP's photowall donation to the Museo ng San Pablo was installed at the great hall with 9 photos of the Philippine National Railways during its construction in 1912.

It was brought to San Pablo by the Railways and Industrial Heritage Society of the Philippines' President Mr. Jaime Tiongson with other members Karel Brouwers, Edlee S. Tusi, Alberto Q. Nual, and Airnel Abarra. Cultural Society President Palermo Banagale, Arch. Bimbo Barte, Eva Ticzon, Nhel de Ono and Lerma S. Prudente were at the Museo to receive the donation last Saturday, April 18, 2009.

The Cultual Society is very grateful to the Railways and Industrial Heritage Society of the Philippines for old photographs of the San Pablo Railroad Station circa 1908 acquired from the U.S. National Archives.

Mr. Jaime F. Tiongson, RIHSP President with Mr. Airnel Abarra (one of its members who is also a teacher in San Pablo) visited the Museo ng San Pablo last October 2008 to show the CSSP members the sample pictures.

The RIHSP picture donation will be installed by the end of the month in a beautiful photowall.

We're hoping more historical materials will be loaned or donated to the Museo so we can complete the story of our hometown - San Pablo.

Museo Joint Partnership

The establishment of a Museo ng San Pablo has been an elusive dream for the City. Series of attempts were done in the past to come up with a permanent repository of relics, artifacts, historical records, documents and cultural traditions but nothing came close to its realization. Future generations will be denied of their concept of cultural and historical beginnings if the present ignore the call of preserving its past.

Thus, through the initiative of the San Pablo City Tourism Council with the encouragement and support of Fundacion Santiago Inc. - the Cultural Society of San Pablo, Laguna, Inc. was formed to enter into a joint partnership with the City Government through Mayor Vicente B. Amante acting under authority of the Sangguniang Panglunsod Board Resolution No. 2006-196.

In a Memorandum of Agreement, the Parties are tasked to formulate the Museo ng San Pablo Development Plan which shall undertake, execute and implement the restoration, rehabilitation, and adaptive re-use of the historic Municipal Hall’s 3rd & 4th floors as a Museum that will showcase the history and people of San Pablo City. Each of the parties has its own responsibility in the development of the Museo ng San Pablo.

Among the objectives of the Museo ng San Pablo are: the promotion and the preservation and conservation of Philippine historical and cultural heritage and resources, and the development of tourism along the lines of conserving and raising an appreciation for Philippine socio-cultural heritage.

The Project Proponents:

· City Government of San Pablo represented by the City Mayor Vicente B. Amante
· Cultural Society of San Pablo, Laguna, Inc., a non-stock, non-profit organization
· Fundacion Santiago, Inc., a non-stock, non-profit organization
· San Pablo City Tourism Council, a multi-sectoral organization

Adaptive Re-use of the Municipal Hall

From the town hall with roof tiles made of bricks which was completed in 1809 -1810, located at the town plaza, the municipal hall was relocated to its present site near Sampaloc Lake.

The land was bought in 1937 by Municipal President Inocencio Barleta as future site of the town hall. The building, designed by Architect Antonio Toledo of the Bureau of Public Works’ Division of Architecture, was constructed in 1940 during the incumbency of Municipal President Cristeto Brion. It was inaugurated by President Manuel L. Quezon.

A logo study for the Cultural Society of San Pablo, Laguna depicts the hands that will nurture the cultural heritage of the city, its seven lakes, its lands, and most importantly, its people.

The Cultural Society of San Pablo, Laguna appreciates very much the support and cooperation of those who bought tickets to the first fund-raising project for the Museo ng San Pablo. Proceeds will be used to repair the wood tiles in the 4th floor of the old capitolyo.

We're very glad that pledges for museum display materials are coming in. Ms. Melo Javier is donating 2 antique jars unearthed near the San Pablo and Dolores, Quezon boundaries. Mrs. Nena Millares is donating antiques, too. Mr. Efren de Castro has already donated 2 Elgin pocket watch. Mr. Raymond Agapito has promised some paintings for the museum. Ms. Ellen Reyes is excited about a room to adopt. Ms. Donna Eseo of the City Tourism Office has already received some materials, too.

Tita Ising is known among her friends as the "Tala ng San Nicolas." She is well known in the education community, being a former principal, supervisor and a Girl Scout leader.

The Museo team was able to interview her on very short notice about her native barangay San Nicolas. She told us stories of the pre-war community and how Gen. Malvar used to hide from Spanish soldiers in the rice storeroom at the Prudencia Fule residence, now donated to the San Nicolas Elem. School.

The San Pablo Jaycees (JCI San Pablo) has joined the Cultural Society in a project to gather materials and documents of cultural and historical worth for use in our city museum at the old capitol building - Museo ng San Pablo.

Any of the following may be submitted with the item description, your name, address and contact number - old photos (photos of people, places, events and activities, transportation, livelihood, arts & culture, etc.), heirlooms, artifacts, handicrafts, memorabilia, household items, clothing, artwork, paperwork and other TREASURES from the Past that will trace the roots of San Pablo.

All submitted item will be duplicated as museum material before returning them to owners unless donated to the museum.

SPECIAL PRIZE will be given to the oldest and most unique material. No registration fee is required. AWARDING will be on May 7, 2007.

The Bracelet

I met a friend who owns a property along Sampaloc Lake. Inviting him to join the Cultural Society, he readily told me that he will be donating something to the Museo ng San Pablo! Wow! probably our first donor... Ano kaya yon?

Then he told me, while digging for the toilet "balon", his workers came upon a jar... not the Chinese vases kind said to be found near the rivers of San Pablo. But however carefully they dug around it, wala... basag na rin and all that was left was the bottom portion. I asked him where the remains of the jar were. Anla eh di pinagtatapon daw. Ay sus!

And there was also a skeleton of a woman still with a necklace and bracelet!

"What did you do with the skeleton?" He said he transfered her to another burial ground but did not mention where. And he wrapped the "bracelet" in a piece of cloth and kept it in his garage. Our first piece of artifact???

The Cultural Society's NCCA grant proposal for the "Restoration of the San Pablo City Old Municipal Building for Adaptive Reuse as Museo de San Pablo" is
currently with the Project Management Division for evaluation.

Cherry of Fundacion Santiago has submitted proposals to two foreign funding agencies.

Let's all pray we get positive responses from them soon.

Plan is to have the soft opening of the Museo de San Pablo on Charter Day in May 2007. Hala... fund-raising dapat tayo!

My proposal - the entire central hall of the 4th floor shall be the Exhibit Area revolving on the coconut industry and San Pablo's culture and heritage; the left wing will be the grand social hall and the right wing (facing Dona Leonila Park) will house the curator's room, the resource center, and the museum cafe and souvenir shop. The right wing of the 3rd floor shall be the Mayors' Gallery and the Ninuno Exhibit Area with the whole lobby as "San Pablo Today Exhibit Area." The 3rd floor's left wing will be reserved for the Museo Boardroom and the Trade Exhibit Area (to be rented out). A Children's Resource Center shall be located also in the 3rd floor as well as the Museum office and storerooms.

SM San Pablo

No one remembers when the giant mango tree at the city plaza was planted. But a picture somewhere in this blog tells us that it has survived the 1938 fire and has been there during WWII.

During my college days, the mango tree is a landmark for my friends from UP coming to San Pablo to visit. "When you see the mango tree at the plaza, use the road to the right of the Cathedral and turn left... my house is just 3 lots away from the street corner."

It has become popularly known as "SM San Pablo" - Sa Manga. Locals would say, "let's meet at SM"... or "Manong, doon lang po ako sa SM."

Whenever I pass by SM, i always get awed by the crown of the century old (?) mango tree... it's so huge and beautiful to look at. During the Christmas season, capiz lanterns hang on its many branches and gives joy to pedestrians and travellers.

I have been planning to take a photo of SM but I kept procrastinating. And then Milenyo came... one of the strongest typhoons to hit the country. Neighbors were telling me... "Ma'm nabiak ang mangga." I knew right away that they're talking of our SM. And I was guilty of not having taken "the picture" sooner. But SM had again survived Typhoon Milenyo... it's still there, standing upright at the city plaza though shaved of most of its branches.

Hermanos Belen

I lived most of my life in a street called Hermanos Belen. It's in the Cathedral block... a side street actually.

When we studied the Spanish time lay-out, it is said that the houses of the "ilustrados" are located around the plaza (the town triangle - the church, the Casa Real, the Escuela Pia.)

Based on the location of our house owned by the family since Spanish times, we do not belong to the richy rich pala! But many of the lots in our street were owned by relatives up to the street corner, and my grandmother said the houses were really huge with azotea and the two cuevas beneath where rice grains were stored. I remember these cuevas were used by my dad as photography darkroom, as storeroom for my grandma's burong mangga... santol... and everything buro. Later on, it was where all junks were stored.And a place to hide during our younger days of hide and seek!

The two storey house filled up the whole lot ... probably 1,000 square meters in floor area. At the end of our street was the old municipal cemetery which is now where the San Pablo Colleges is. Another block from the other side of the street were said to be cornfields.

When my children were in high school, their first assignment was to write about were they live in the province. And so, they kept on asking why our street is called Hermanos Belen. Remembering mi poquito Espanol that I learned from Mo. Anna (a sweet Italian nun) and Senora "I forgot her name", I told my kids, well hermanos means brothers, so Belen must be their surnames thus, Hermanos Belen. And they asked what were the names of the Belen brother? Sus ginoo.. basta... magkapatid na Belen yan!

Just last week, I found out their names as I was reading a narrative by Ruben Taningco - the hermanos Belen were Juan and Epitacio Belen! They were local heroes. They were killed in that part of the town named after them... Hermanos Belen Street. But there is a tale that the Belen brothers were actually bandits who were forced to fight the Spaniards and their bodies were badly cut (ginutay). Whatever, if they fought the oppressors, they're still local heroes.

The San Pablo Cathedral

This church in bustling San Pablo City is an exponent of neo-classical architecture. Built in 1774, it is an Augustinian piece of architecture that used to house a good collection of silver jewels, pewter candlesticks, and altar silverware. It is designed simply, with Doric coupled columns and a unique podium with inter-locking triangular and segmented arches. It has decorative bound windows and a four-storey octagonal bell tower with alternating blank and open windows.

A few years ago, a canopy at the main door of the Cathedral was added to the structure.

This town (of San Pablo) used to be called Sampaloc (which means "tamarind") because of the many tamarind trees which grew here... The chieftain or cassique who ruled Sampaloc, or San Pablo, was the old Gat Pagil, that is to say, Don Pagil. The cassique Gat Pulintan ruled over the settlements of Bulaquin to Masalocot, and from the river Labasin to Panghaya-an, which is now within the borders of Batangas... This cassique was long remembered for his deeds of valor. From Macopa to Galamus the cassique Gat Sungayan held sway, a great hunter of deer and wild boar. From the settlement of Lomot and Palagpaquin, and from Bitin-Olila to Cococ, which is now territory of Santo Tomas, the cassique Gat Salacab was ruler. These four cassiques were lords of the said lands by right of war and conquest. They were of mixed Bornean and Negrito (or Aeta) blood, a mixture which in their old speech was called Dayhagan.

It was said that most families in San Pablo depend on the "patak ng niyog" every 45 days that they do not need to find work and have all the time for socials.

Through a MOA signed last May 29, 2006, the 3rd and 4th floors of the old capitol building will be the site of the Museo de San Pablo.

The Municipal Building of San Pablo
The site of the present City Hall Complex was purchased by the Municipal Government of San Pablo during the administration of Municipal President Inocencio Barleta in 1937, but the actual construction of the town hall was undertaken during the administration of Municipal President Cristeto Brion. It was inaugurated with Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon as guest of honor on March 30, 1940. According to hometown historian Juan B. Hernandez, it was during the ceremonies that Quezon promised that he would readily approve the bill authored by Assemblyman Tomas D. Dizon proposing the conversion of the town into a city. Quezon fulfilled his promise when he signed Commonwealth Act No. 520 on May 1, 1940.
When the first set of city officials led by former Laguna Governor Potenciano as City Mayor took their oath before Interior Secretary Rafael Alunan on January 2, 1941, the town hall was readily converted into a city hall to house the Office of the City Mayor, the Office and Session Hall of the Municipal Council, the City Treasurer, the Office of the City Health Officer, and the Office of the Chief of Police. The first elected City Mayor was Cipriano Colago, a former guerilla major, who assumed office on January 1, 1956.
Former City Engineer Guillermo P. Inciong said the building was designed by the Division of Architecture of the defunct Bureau of Public Works as a norm during the Commonwealth Era. The structural stability of the building was tested during the War for Liberation when it was able to withstand the explosion of a 500-pound bomb dropped by the US Air Force planes of returning Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

Bimbo Laurel, all founding members of the Cultural Society of San Pablo, Laguna, Inc. which was organized to pursue the long-time dream of having a San Pablo community museum. It is now registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission and is in partnership with Fundacion Santiago Inc. and the SPC Tourism Council for the Museo de San Pablo project.

The picture was "unearthed" from the archives of the Lopez Museum showing the City plaza before and after the fire of 1938. The Cultural Society will be requesting San Pablenos to share old photographs for the Museo de San Pablo exhibits. Guess I have to dig up the "baul" in the bodega ... old photos can be talking points to bring back the memory of the city's grand past.

Fundacion Santiago sponsored our trip to Negros in November 2005. A sumptuous lunch was hosted by Ms. Lyn Gamboa, the gracious president of the Negros Museum, consisting of Negrense specialties ... and that was the beginning of our introduction to the Negrense way of life ... what ingredients were used and how the meal was prepared. The food was similar to Tagalog dishes with a twist.
